Expansion

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q:

What will happen to the Mint Museum of Art on Randolph Road?

A:

Our current plans for expansion are designed to celebrate our past and embrace the future. The Mint Museum of Art will maintain its current location on Randolph Road and continue to present rich artistic traditions in one of Charlotte’s most beautiful neighborhoods. The collections to remain will be: Ceramics; Historic Costume; Pre-Columbian; Asian; Coins & Currency; Decorative Arts; and Spanish Colonial.

Q:

What will happen to the Mint Museum of Craft + Design on N. Tryon Street?

A:

The current Craft + Design building will be sold and the Craft + Design collection will move to the new facility on South Tryon Street. This venture will serve to showcase craft’s unique offerings by exposing the collection to more viewers than currently see it today. Bank of America has demonstrated their support for the Mint’s expansion by agreeing to sell the existing Craft + Design building to create capital funding for the new facility.

Q:

How big will the new facility for The Mint Museums be?

A:

The new facility for The Mint Museums will be approximately 145,000 square feet and will be a vibrant part of a Wachovia-sponsored development that will include a 1,200-seat theater, the Bechtler Art Museum, the Afro-American Cultural Center, Wake Forest Graduate School, an office tower and retail/residential components.

Q:

What is the benefit of the new facility for The Mint Museums being a part of a cultural campus?

A:

Being on the same campus will allow the Museums to maintain their own unique identities while enjoying operating efficiencies, enhanced visitor experiences, extra amenities such as a sculpture garden and café, and collaboration opportunities with the adjacent cultural arts community.

Q:

What is the benefit of having a new Mint Museum facility in uptown Charlotte?

A:

The expansion will benefit the entire Charlotte community. The new facility will provide the physical space the Mint needs to display its growing collections, stage larger special exhibitions, and increase its public programs, outreach and educational services. Additionally, the experience of visitors and members will be upgraded through new and enhanced spaces such as a café, auditorium, education facilities, library access, museum shop, reception areas, coat room, and a rooftop terrace with indoor dining and reception area capabilities that will provide an exciting view across to the Green and up and down Tryon Street.
