Saylan, a Californian, is recognized in the woodturning field for her innovation, scholarship, and service. Saylan attributes her influences to nature, color, and Japanese design, among others. Her use of color and texture in her work transforms her wood objects into canvases of expression. Saylans academic leadership is evident in her numerous publications and her participation in several artist-in-residence programs. Additionally, Saylan has served as a board member for The Woodturning Center and the American Association of Woodturners.
